Superior-quality ring shank nails are used for fixing gripper, hardboard, and plywood to wooden floors. Ring shank nails are used where the strength of the fixing hold is of maximum importance.  To obtain this strong fix, the rings on the nail's shank are angled in a conical shape to ensure they will insert cleanly when fitted but are then extremely difficult to release.
